France
has some great horseracing courses in almost every "department".
Flat Racing, steeplechasing, and trotting, as well as
dressage events are all very popular throughout the country.
If you prefer steeplechasing go to the Hippodrome at Auteuil
, which has races from May to October. Here we have outlined
some of the more popular courses and events around Paris and
throughout France.
In Paris, horse racing means Longchamp.
Nestling in the tranquil setting of the Bois de
Boulogne, on the outskirts of Paris - the former royal abbey
is now a world famous race course. On the first weekend of
October each year the Prix de L'Arc
de Triomphe is held. The "Prix"
is the most prestigious and also the richest race in Europe
and attracts all the top names in the horseracing world.
Fashion, style and ceremony is what Longchamp and the Prix
de L'Arc de Triomphe is all about. Before the
"Prix" a grand parade is held, with all the pomp
and ceremony befitting a world series race. The event always
attracts a huge international audience and serious backing
from all those involved in the betting. Longchamp is
also home to the French Guineas and many other GI races.
An hour away from Paris by train or car and just 15 minutes
from Charles de Gaulle airport lies Chantilly
racecourse, home of the French Oaks and the French
Derby. The magnificent training facilities in Chantilly
include 120 kilometers of training tracks over 3600 acres
in the Chantilly Forest. The race course is set next to the
grounds of the beautiful Chateau of Chantilly and its
magnificent horse museum, which is incorporated into the
stables. However the stables are not just ordinary horse
stables, they are probably the most magnificent in the
world, as the creator, a former royal owner, loved
horses so much he wished to be reincarnated as one and
wanted a fitting place for himself. The stables themselves
resemble a palace, with beautiful design and decoration -
truly worth a visit, even to see the stables.
Deauville
is a beautiful resort on the Channel coast. Its La
Touques and Clairfontaine racetracks are nearly as famous as
Longchamp. The town is a destination in itself. Visited by
the rich and famous, it has beaches, casinos, and regattas.
A legacy of the Second Empire, the hotels are to be looked
at, even if too expensive to stay in. The summer racing
festival takes place at the beautiful Deauville sea-side
resort beginning at the end of July and continuing
throughout the month of August. It returns there again for a
few days in October. Around Deauville, Normandy is the heart
of the French breeding industry.
